AACN Selects Adelphi to Pilot Learning Strategies for Leadership, Resilience in New Nurses

Garden City, NY (01/10/2023) — Adelphi University's College of Nursing and Public Health has been selected by American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to participate in a national initiative designed to prepare the next generation of nurses with strong skills in the areas of leadership, resilience, self-care, and well-being. The pilot program will kick off in the spring 2023 semester.

After receiving an overwhelming number of responses to the call for pilot schools, Adelphi was chosen as one of only 10 national, prestigious schools of nursing selected for this opportunity. Adelphi is the only institution in New York State selected for this program.

"This opportunity from AACN comes at a critical moment as we are experiencing a significant shortage in nursing staff and educators, all of which need to be prepared for a changing world," said Deborah Hunt, PhD, RN, dean of Adelphi's College of Nursing and Public Health. "Being selected as one of the pilot schools is truly an honor and will provide us with the ability to network with our esteemed colleagues and access the resources required to prepare our next generation of nurses with skills and competencies in the areas of leadership, resilience, self-care, and well-being. We are grateful for the support of the AACN and the generous funding of Johnson & Johnson for this pilot and are excited to be at the forefront of this initiative."

The AACN launched this initiative to infuse new content into baccalaureate nursing programs, which will help graduates develop the skills needed to foster personal health, resilience, and well-being, as well as strong leadership skills. Adelphi CNPH was chosen to participate in a funded study to prepare nursing students and new nurses to deal with stress. The program will be led by Adelphi CNPH faculty members Marilyn Klainberg, PhD, and Deborah Ambrosio-Mawhirter, EdD, who nominated the University for this opportunity.

"Even before the impact of the Covid Pandemic, it had been documented that nurses experience high rates of stress, which can lead to depression, anxiety and burnout," said Klainberg. "Due to these factors many experience unhealthy behaviors and these may impact one's resilience, sleep, and diet. Most important is that these factors may have an impact on patient care."

Schools selected to participate in this groundbreaking effort include:

Adelphi University (NY)

California State University-Chico

Fayetteville State University (NC)

Georgia State University

Mount Carmel College of Nursing (OH)

Nevada State College

Rutgers University - Camden (NJ)

Samuel Merritt University (CA)

University of Minnesota

University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio

"As nurse leaders we must be stewards of our profession and are responsible for developing future nurses' professional identities," said Ambrosio-Mawhirter. "This prestigious grant from AACN provides us with the support we need to heavily infuse skills like self care, leadership and resilience into our nursing curriculum."
