Adelphi, Youth INC Develop Pipeline for Leaders of Color

Garden City, NY (09/09/2021) — Adelphi University's Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Youth INC are teaming up to strengthen the pipeline and heighten access for individuals of color to advance in nonprofit leadership. The new 12-month certificate program, Rise Academy, will help future leaders explore opportunities to move forward on whatever paths they choose - applying the knowledge and experience gained through the program, their work and their lives.

Rise Academy will be offered in three phases to address a range of competencies, skills and practices; Individual Leadership, Nonprofit Organizational Leadership, and Community Leadership. The group will meet virtually once or twice per month for a three-hour workshop supported by weekly online discussions.

The curriculum design is ideal for busy nonprofit professionals and community leaders.

The program is supported by the program's instructors Jennifer Rutledge, Leading in Community program director, A. Brian Leander, PhD, assistant director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Christina Flythe, director of Nutrition of Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc.

"Rise Academy is a wonderful opportunity to partner with Youth INC to expand the reach and impact of the Center's highly-regarded 'Leading in Community Certificate Program' as we continue to build the pipeline of leaders and eliminate barriers to the success of leaders of color in the nonprofit sector," said Rutledge, a Rise Academy instructor.

In addition to the launching of Rise Academy, Adelphi's Center for Nonprofit Leadership created the Leading in Community program, which is located in and supported by Adelphi University School of Social Work. LIC's primary goal is to broaden and strengthen the leadership pipeline for people of color and prepare them for nonprofit and community leadership.

Youth INC's venture philanthropy model uses a rigorous screening and due diligence process to find the city's best run, grassroots, youth-serving nonprofits. Once they become partners, Youth INC empowers them with the coaching, capital and connections they need to succeed. Currently, Youth INC has 75 active nonprofit partners who serve more than 300,000 young people across all five boroughs of New York City.
