Adelphi Celebrates Black History Month
Garden City, NY (01/28/2022) — In celebration of Black History Month, Adelphi University will be spotlighting accomplishments and achievements of Black people in the community and around the world throughout February. From an art exhibit by a famous rapper and activist to a documentary screening to dialogues and public lectures among the Adelphi community, these virtual and in-person events illustrate many ways we can support change, progress and equity.
This year's events include:
Chuck D and The Near Def Experience: Most Of My Heroes Don't Appear On No Stamps
February 1 through March 4
Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center
Famed rapper, activist, artist and cultural theorist Chuck D '84, '13 (Hon.), will share his artwork in a solo exhibition: "Most Of My Heroes Don't Appear On No Stamps." This exhibition, on view in Adelphi's newly renovated Ruth S. Harley University Center, will feature artwork focused on honoring Chuck D's heroes, including a work featuring Stevie Wonder.
Great Books, Great Conversations: An Evening with Jacqueline Woodson '16 (Hon.)

Adelphi's "Great Books, Great Conversations" event is a newly launched series that will feature New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline Woodson '16 (Hon.). Woodson will discuss her works and writing process with author, professor and NAACP nominated poet Jacqueline Jones LaMon, JD, vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Adelphi. Sponsored by the Pleasures in Reading and Literature endowment, the event will be moderated by an alumna and avid reader, Sybile Val '99, MD.

Members of the Adelphi community are encouraged to register to read aloud from their favorite Black writer's poems, plays, short stories, essays or novels. All are welcome to attend this celebration of Black talent. This event is sponsored by Adelphi's Learning and Writing Centers and the African, Black and Caribbean Studies Program, which is celebrating 51 years of leading progress in diversity, equity and inclusion.
John Hope Franklin Distinguished Lecture

A newly appointed associate professor of African American literature in the African, Black, and Caribbean Studies Program, Patricia G. Lespinasse, PhD, will address"(Re)sounding Freedom: The Vernacular Tradition In African Diaspora Texts.. The lecture will touch on African American vernacular traditions, such as sermons, spirituals, blues and jazz, through a historical perspective as well as analyze these vernacular traditions' connection to soundscapes in African Diaspora Literature.
