Adelphi Celebrates Poetry Day with Long Island High School Students

Garden City, NY (04/16/2021) — More than 140 Long Island high school students will explore their creativity during Adelphi University's annual Poetry Day celebration on Friday, April 30. The event, hosted online this year, will be filled with workshops, a poetry slam and contest, a keynote speaker and an award ceremony.

Students will participate in workshops led by Adelphi faculty Caitlin Scena, Michelle Bermudez and Robin Gow. Poet and author Cynthia Dewi Oka will serve as this year's keynote speaker as well as a workshop leader.

Keynote speaker Dewi Oka is the author of "Salvage: Poems and Nomad of Salt and Hard Water: Poems." Her work has appeared in espnW, Hyperallergic, Guernica, Academy of American Poets' American Poets magazine, The American Poetry Review, The Kenyon Review, wildness, Scoundrel Time, The Massachusetts Review, Painted Bride Quarterly and others. She is a contributor to the anthologies "Women of Resistance: Poems for a New Feminism," "Who Will Speak for America?" and "What Saves Us: Poems of Empathy and Outrage in the Age of Trump." Her work has also been selected for the "Best of Kweli: An Aster(ix) Anthology."

High schools participating in this year's Poetry Day include East Islip High School, Freeport High School, Longwood High School, MAST High School, Shoreham-Wading River High School, South Side High School, Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School, Valley Stream Central High School and Waldorf School.

The event, part of Adelphi's Annual High School Special Events Series, will conclude with a poetry contest and awards ceremony celebrating the winners.
