Adelphi Extends Standardized-Test Optional Policy for Five Years
Garden City, NY (03/07/2023) — Admission to Adelphi University will be standardized-test optional for students entering its undergraduate programs through Fall 2028/Spring 2029, extending a policy adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In collaboration with University leadership, the Adelphi Faculty Senate approved the five-year extension of the test-optional policy on March 6, joining hundreds of colleges and universities that have adopted similar measures.
"As we celebrate two years of record high retention and progression rates, we've proven our ability to select an incredibly qualified and accomplished class of young scholars without reliance on test scores," said Kristen Capezza, MBA '12, Adelphi's vice president of enrollment management and university communications. "We are pleased to eliminate the pressure of submitting standardized test scores for the many students and families interested in Adelphi University."
Students have the option, but are not required, to submit the SAT or ACT for admission to Adelphi for all of its undergraduates-with the exception of a few joint degree programs that still require submission of test scores on the basis of partner institution requirements. In addition, merit scholarships do not require the submission of test scores, ensuring all students have access to the generous aid awarded by Adelphi.
The Faculty Senate also passed the permanent adoption of Duolingo, adding the exam to the University's approved list of acceptable English language proficiency exams for prospective students who are non-native English speakers. Like other English proficiency tests, Duolingo assesses a students' reading, writing and speaking-but unlike other standard tests, it can be taken online from any location via a desktop computer, mobile device or smartphone. It is currently accepted by more than 1,000 colleges and universities.
"We are excited about the approval of these policies, supporting our ongoing priorities of improving access to a quality college education as well as enhancing our student-centered admissions process," said Shawana Singletary, Adelphi's assistant vice president and chief enrollment officer.
