Adelphi Hosts Apprentice Challenge For Local High School Students

Garden City, NY (11/05/2021) — For 15 years, Adelphi University has helped teach local high school students how to turn their ideas into successful business plans through the annual Apprentice Challenge. This year, students from 23 local high schools will participate in the 2021 Virtual Adelphi Apprentice Challenge: Business Conference on Friday, November 12. The competition will run from 9 a.m. to noon via Zoom.

More than 250 students from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens will be divided into 23 teams to create a strategic marketing plan based on a case study. This year's case study will be presented by L'Oreal USA.

Expert business faculty from Adelphi's Robert B. Willumstad School of Business will provide insight on key marketing components and how to successfully create a marketing plan. Teams will present their plan to a distinguished panel of judges from L'Oreal USA and Adelphi. The team that creates the most successful marketing plan will be awarded the coveted title of the "Adelphi Apprentice."

Judges from L'Oreal USA will include Nick Iadevaio MBA' 00, vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), Kris Jean, assistant vice President of DEI, Marissa Smith, manager of DEI, Cassie Liverance, vice president of supply chain innovation and operations, Carol Elmasry, director of research and innovation, Meg Malhame, manager of Consumer Products, Shivya Bansal, senior scientist, Ben Rose, assistant vice president of Salon Centric Store Operations, and Sultana Kazanas, Director of National Accounts. Other judges include Michael Graziano, Former Managing Director of Ethics and Compliance at BNP Paribas, Karen Parish Autry, associate director of employer relations at Adelphi, and Michael Wentz, adjunct business professor and director of digital marketing at Adelphi.

The annual competition has been bringing talented and ambitious high school students together from across Long Island since 2007. More than 2,800 "apprentices" have participated, including a number who have gone on to study at Adelphi's Robert B. Willumstad School of Business. Adelphi business graduates include some of the region's top marketing leaders, serving a variety of brands and companies.

The event is part of Adelphi's Annual High School Special Event Series, designed to give high school students a chance to experience college life while gaining self-confidence, making social connections and exploring areas of interest.
