Adelphi Introduces New Career-Focused B.S. in Health Sciences

June 30, 2020 (06/30/2020) — Beginning in fall 2020, undergraduates at Adelphi University will have a new degree option, a bachelor's in health sciences. Students in the program will prepare for careers in the growing industry of healthcare, building skills in research and interprofessional practice -- while gaining a deep understanding of cultural diversity.

Adelphi's Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program will emphasize working collaboratively with professionals from different fields guided by the core competencies of ethics and values. Using a problem-based approach, students will be able to develop as reflective service-providers.

"The BS in Health Sciences was designed to develop students into multidimensional thinkers who are well-prepared to follow any health-related career path," said Andrea Ward, PhD, professor and department chair of biology. "Through this interdisciplinary program, students will not only acquire a strong foundation in the natural, physical, and social sciences, but will also study ethical decision making, the impacts of cultural diversity on healthcare, global and domestic approaches to health policy and how to collaborate across traditional disciplinary boundaries."

Those in the new program have an option of concentrations aimed at specific career paths:

Biomedical: Continue to graduate school in a health-related field; become a laboratory technician, medical assistant or medical scribe.

Health Promotion: Continue to graduate school in community health promotion; become a medical assistant, community outreach coordinator or healthcare program planner.

Healthcare Administration and Leadership: Continue to graduate school in business or public health; become a medical office administrator, healthcare program planner or hospital coordinator.

Foundations in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Continue to graduate school in communication sciences; become a speech-language pathologist or audiologist.

Social and Behavioral Sciences: Continue to graduate school in psychology, social work or public health; become a health inspector, public health assistant or patient service liaison.
