Adelphi Presents Dialogue on Democracy With Former US Ambassador, Homeland Security Secretary

Garden City, NY (10/26/2021) — On Thursday, November 4, Adelphi University will host "The Future of Democracy: A U.S. and International Perspective," a conversation between former U.S. Ambassador and Adelphi Trustee Joseph W. Westphal, PhD, and former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. The event will be in person and live streamed from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the concert hall at Adelphi's Performing Arts Center (PAC).

The conversation is a part of Adelphi's Global Dialogues series, which brings high-profile U.N. ambassadors and officials from around the world to broaden the understanding of the Adelphi community on local, national and international issues.

This dialogue between Westphal and Johnson will focus on democratic values and principles nationally and internationally.

Westphal, a 1970 Adelphi graduate, was the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2014 to 2017. He is currently Senior Global Fellow at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration and a non-resident Fellow at the International Studies Center of the Catholic University of Chile. He has held positions in the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama, working in the Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Defense and the Department of State.

Johnson, who received an Adelphi honorary degree in 2014 and served as a trustee from 2001-2005, is a partner in the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP, and the former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017). Prior to becoming Secretary of Homeland Security, Johnson was General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012). He also is on the board of directors of Lockheed Martin, U.S. Steel, the Council on Foreign Relations, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City and the Center for a New American, as well as a trustee at Columbia University. Johnson is also a commentator on national and homeland security matters for news networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, FOX, CNBC, NPR and Bloomberg TV.

In-person tickets are $5 and free for students, staff, faculty and alumni. Virtual tickets are also free, but registration is required.
