Adelphi to Celebrate Black History Month
Garden City, NY (01/27/2021) — The Adelphi University community will come together to recognize and celebrate Black History Month through various events and offerings, beginning Monday, February 1. The University has organized an art exhibit, lectures, film screenings and discussions that explore the history and achievements of Black people.
Among the events are:
February 1 through March 6
Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center
The Adelphi University Exhibitions Program, in collaboration with the African, Black, and Caribbean Studies Department, will present a solo exhibition by Elan Cadiz in celebration of Black History Month. This exhibition, which will be on display in Adelphi's newly renovated Ruth S. Harley University Center, will feature Cadiz's ongoing "Scaffold Project," which is a large body of paintings featuring the many individuals that make up the artist's extended community.
A Giant Leap in a Time of Struggle: A Discussion with Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Beamon
Thursday, February 4, 7 to 9 p.m.
Adelphi Athletics will present its 19th Annual Black History Month Celebration in conjunction with the University series Great Minds, Great Conversations. Ron Lee '67, chair of Adelphi University's Board of Trustees, will interview Beamon about his unbroken 52-year-old Olympic record, his time at Adelphi and his reflections on the Black Power movement.
Registration is required.
Reel Justice Film Series: 13th
Tuesday, February 16, 6 to 8 p.m.
A screening of Ava DuVernay's extraordinary and galvanizing documentary "13th" will be held via Zoom. The film's title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States." The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.
The Reel Justice Film Series is a monthly screening and discussion of a film focused on social justice issues.
Secrets of the Hollow: Last Disintegrated School
Thursday, March 11, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Adelphi 1985 graduates and sisters Alicia M. Crow and Alice T. Crowe will discuss their short documentary "Secrets of the Hollow: Last Disintegrated School," which shares the untold story of Thurgood Marshall's fight in 1943 to desegregate the last segregated school in New York State-more than 10 years before his landmark case, Brown v. Board of Education.
The film is narrated by Chuck D, 1984 Adelphi graduate and 2012 honorary degree recipient, founder of the rap group Public Enemy and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The event is also part of Adelphi's Great Minds, Great Conversation series.
