Adelphi to Host High School Students for Annual Press Day, Quill Awards

Garden City, NY (02/19/2021) — Approximately 225 high school students from across Long Island, Queens and Upstate New York will come together on Friday, February 26, to participate in a day-long Virtual Press Day event hosted by Adelphi University. The event will provide student-journalists with some tricks of the trade from seasoned print and digital media professionals and Adelphi communications faculty through panels and workshops.

This year, the Virtual Press Day event will focus on the challenge of churning out news remotely, with the theme being "Scholastic Journalism in a Pandemic." A panel of Adelphi journalism professors, high school journalists and school newspaper advisers will discuss the challenges of keeping school communities informed and the news-gathering lessons learned during the ongoing pandemic. In addition to the panel, a series of workshops on journalism skills will be offered by professors.

This year's keynote speaker will be Meg Norris, publisher of Litmor Publications, a group of five weekly papers on Long Island including the award-winning Garden City News.

The event, which will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., will conclude with the presentation of the annual Quill Awards featuring 9 categories: Most Outstanding Newspaper (Printed or Online), Most Outstanding Reporter, Best News Article, Best Feature Article, Best Sports Story or Column, Best Opinion Piece (Column or Editorial), Best Visual (Photograph or Artwork), Best Arts Review and Best Layout.
