Adelphi to Host Virtual Press Day and Quill Awards for High School Students
Garden City, NY (02/11/2022) — Nearly 250 high school students from across Long Island will participate in Adelphi University's annual Press Day on February 18. The day-long online event will give student-journalists an opportunity to explore their passion for journalism through workshops, panels and the expertise of experienced print and digital media professionals and Adelphi communications faculty.
This year, Adelphi's Press Day will explore how journalists address traumatic, tragic stories. A panel of journalists, professors and mental health experts will discuss how student journalists should deal with trauma. There will also be a series of workshops about how journalists can be sensitive when interviewing people about tragic events as well as how they can protect themselves mentally from the trauma they are writing about.
The keynote speaker will be Bradley Wilson, PhD, adjunct faculty member at Adelphi, editor of the National Journalism Education Association's magazine Communication: Journalism Education Today, and managing editor of College Media Review for the College Media Association. In 2020, he received the David Adams Educator of the Year Award from the Scholastic Journalism Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Press Day runs from 8 a.m. to noon and concludes with the Quill Awards, an annual competition in which student editors, reporters and writers are recognized for their work. This year will feature nine categories: Most Outstanding Newspaper (Printed or Online), Most Outstanding Reporter, Best News Article, Best Feature Article, Best Sports Story or Column, Best Opinion Piece (Column or Editorial), Best Visual (Photograph or Artwork), Best Arts Review and Best Layout.
