In developing the Best Online Bachelor's Programs rankings, U.S. News assessed online colleges based on four general categories: engagement, services and technologies, faculty credentials and training, and peer assessments. Together, these categories measure student and instructor interaction; student retention and graduation; availability of technology for distance learning, support services and financial aid resources; online instructors' qualifications; and a holistic perspective on program quality provided by deans and directors at peer institutions.

According to U.S. News, online education is no longer just an option for many students due to full-time employment and family responsibilities-it has become the norm. Experts say colleges and universities are poised to offer and develop even more online degree programs. Advancements in technology, course design and high-speed internet availability are moving online learning forward.
