The common thread amongst each of the six assemblages that make up NEST is their primary material of common paper wasp nests. This seasonal material is carefully deconstructed and glued onto sheets of rice paper, creating a space for the delicately sculpted bone inspired porcelain to find a home within the wasp paper's folds.
Wasp paper, built from a fibrous paste of dead wood and spit, is seen as a common craft material. From greeting cards to decorative accents for book covers, wasp paper can be found in many everyday objects. One can even see wasp paper in internet memes. Images of entire basement or bedroom walls consumed by nests built by large colones, pictures that invoke awe and fear. Fusco is instead more interested in producing a site that visually mixes the wasp's work with her interests.
She describes the works as follows: "Each presented piece seeks to express the shared needs of wasps with humans by mapping out a meditative space. Natural objects simultaneously inspire reflection and anxiety, and provoke our imagination for newer ways of being."
