Team Behind Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine wins 2021 Innovative Applications in Analytics Awards Co-Sponsored by Adelphi
Garden City, NY (04/26/2021) — The team behind the development of Johnson and Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine has won the 2021 Innovative Applications in Analytics Awards (IAAA). The award, organized by INFORMS and sponsored by Adelphi University and Kinaxis, recognizes the creative and unique application of a combination of analytical techniques in unusual applications to provide insights and/or business value.
"This year's winner developed a forecasting technique to predict the spread of COVID-19 and was used in the design of the Janssen vaccine trials worldwide," said Juan Jaramillo, associate professor of analytics at Adelphi's Robert B. Willumstad School of Business and co-chair of the award.
The winning team was made up of 16 members; 11 researchers from Janssen pharmaceuticals; four from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ali Haddad-Sisakht from Dynamic Ideas LLC.
"This year we received more than 40 applications world-wide and our judging panel consisted of analytics experts from industry and academia," Jaramillo said. One of the judges was Zahra Sedighi Maman, assistant professor of Decision Sciences and Marketing at Adelphi's business school.
The second-place award went to a three-member team from MSD Animal Health, whose project focused on optimizing the production of biomass. In third place was a five-member team from University of Michigan that developed an application that improves the diagnostic process of metastatic cancer.
