Adelphi Commemorates Earth Day with Documentary Screening

Garden City, NY (04/15/2021) — Adelphi University will commemorate Earth Day with a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Earth Water Woman. The event, on Thursday, April 22, will include a conversation with the leadership of the Trinidad and Tobago-based NGO, Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP), Akilah Jaramogi and Kemba Nefertiti Jaramogi.

The 22-minute documentary (see a preview) highlights efforts by the Trinidad and Tobago-based environmental group FACRP to return the country's deforested hillsides to a vibrant, healthy ecosystem. FACRP was started in 1982 by the late Tacuma Jaramogi and his wife Akilah Jaramogi to protect the environment against man-made threats of forest fires.

"I organized this Earth Day event to highlight the non-profit community based organization FACRP, which is charged with protecting the forests of Trinidad and Tobago against man-made threats such as forest fires and help preserve the Fones Amandes forest and watershed for future generations to enjoy," said Brian Wygal, director of Adelphi's Environmental Studies and Sciences program.

Akilah Jaramogi, the co-founder and executive director of FACRP, has worked tirelessly to share the organization's model of community forestry over the past three decades in Trinidad and Tobago, the Carribean, the Americas, Europe and recently in the South Pacific.

Kemba Nefertiti Jaramogi is an environmentalist and the technical director of FACRP. She focuses on transforming lives through environmental educational programs, develops projects and teaches environmental best practices in national forums and to partners with like-minded NGOs.

The free event will begin at 6 p.m. Registration is required. For more information and to register, visit bit.ly/AUEarthday.
