Adelphi Concludes 125-Year Celebration and Raises Over $345,000 for Scholarships with 22nd Annual President's Gala
Banner Fundraising Year Surpasses $8 million
Garden City, NY (06/13/2022) — Adelphi University's 22nd Annual President's Gala on Saturday, June 11, raised more than $345,000 for the President's Student Success Scholarship, an endowment that has now surpassed $1 million. This year's event at the Garden City Hotel concluded Adelphi's 125th-anniversary celebrations, honoring the University legacy and those who support its longevity and mission.
Net proceeds from the gala go to the President's Student Success Scholarship, an endowment established in 2018 by University President Christine M. Riordan, PhD, to provide critical assistance to juniors and seniors who experience a sudden financial crisis and need help to persist in their studies and complete their degree.
"We are very grateful for the generosity of Adelphi's supporters who made our milestone event, and anniversary year, so successful," said Thomas A. Kline, vice president of University Advancement and External Relations. "Our community appreciates how the President's Student Success Scholarship changes students' lives. Surpassing $1 million is significant, and this growing endowment enables us to expand our impact going forward."
Additionally, the gala commemorated the 65th anniversary of the acclaimed Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology doctoral program and a scholarship for students from underserved communities that reached a milestone of $1.25 million in 2022.
Combined with a landmark Giving Day this past March that raised more than $500,000, several significant gifts to the University in 2021-2022 helped make Adelphi's 125th year a banner one for fundraising, surpassing $8 million to date with a fiscal year ending August 31. Major gifts included a $1 million bequest from alumna Mildred Loughlin Kahane '49 and a $4 million bequest from Samuel Fremd '69. Both gifts support scholarships for nursing students in Adelphi's College of Nursing and Public Health.
President Riordan notes that Adelphi enters its 126th year on this fundraising high note and with a new strategic plan, Momentum 2, which the University's Board of Trustees ratified on June 10.
"Our 125th year has been transformative. After this banner year for fundraising, we're looking forward to Adelphi's next stage of our growth with a bold new five-year plan," said President Riordan. "Our community is extremely motivated to put Momentum 2 into action, lean into innovation, and continue being a pioneer in our region and higher education."
