Adelphi Festival to Celebrate the Arts, Foster Dialogue on War and Peace

Garden City, NY (09/21/2022) — From live performances to installations, Adelphi University's upcoming Fall Arts Festival will bring the campus community together to celebrate the arts while reflecting on and illuminating a particular theme. The day-long, annual event will take place Wednesday, October 12.

The theme of this year's event will be Peace of Art: Fostering Dialogues through the Arts. Participating artists will respond to the concept of war and peace in a number of ways: global war and how current battles are impacting us all; the growing rift that exists nationally (politically, socially, and economically); and personal wars and struggles with mental wellbeing, identity, race, religion and gender.

"This year, we are looking beyond the university to include members of our wider local community in projects like Chalk-Up, and collaborations with alumni artists," said KellyAnn Monaghan, Art Department chair and associate professor. "We are also planning on including community members in dialogues responding to the creative pieces.

In addition to the art installations, the festival will include a poetry reading by creative writing students and alumni, music and dance performances, a film screening, zine-making workshop and screenprinting.

Students will also travel to Brooklyn on Saturday, September 24, to Walk with Amal. An international symbol for human rights, Little Amal is a 3.5 metre-tall puppet who walks in support of refugees. The Walk is a celebration of migration and cultural diversity that tells the story of the contributions made by refugees and immigrants. During the Fall Arts Festival the Adelphi community will create birds for a symbolic walk on campus bringing awareness to the plight of local refugees.

For the first time, students from Division Avenue High School in Levittown will be involved in a community art exhibit at the festival. Students will have their art and digital work displayed. A YouTube video will also be streamed.

"The goal of the festival remains for the Adelphi community to come together using arts as a tool for social connection and dialogue through creative translation and collaboration," said Monaghan.
