Adelphi First-Generation Student Named Newman Civic Fellow
Garden City, NY (03/23/2022) — For the fifth consecutive year, an Adelphi University student has been selected for the prestigious Newman Civic Fellowship. Caio Gomes, an Adelphi junior and first-generation student, will be a fellow for 2022-2023.
"Caio is a natural leader who is highly engaged in organizations on and off our campus. And, he has directed his studies and activities in pursuit of a career to serve the common good," said Christine Riordan, PhD, president of Adelphi. "A Newman Civic Fellowship will further support Caio's goals, broaden his perspective and introduce him to a network of others with similar purpose and values."
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program that recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. The program, which will include 173 students, is sponsored by Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education.
As a fellow, Gomes, an international student from Brazil, will receive training and resources that nurture passions and help implement change.
"I feel so honored and extremely great to be this year's Newman Civic Fellow," said Gomes. "Especially as an international student, it is a great opportunity to be able to show my abilities and further my leadership capabilities."
A Leader and Changemaker with a Passion for Human Rights
Throughout his time in school, Gomes had an inherent passion for leadership and inspiring others to promote change and justice. As a first-generation and international student, Gomes brought his passions to Adelphi by joining impactful organizations such as the Levermore Global Scholars program, which supports future global leaders and thinkers through seminars, internships and service projects. He also serves as an officer in the International Student Society and the Multilingual Experience Club.
Along with being a student activist on campus, Gomes is a research intern for Safe Place International, a nonprofit organization that supports LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Greece, Turkey and other countries.
Gomes is currently majoring in international relations with a dual minor in peace studies and environmental studies. He says he is motivated by a strong commitment to human rights and believes that changing the world begins by making an impact on those around you.
"Starting small can create a chain of action that will help guide us towards a better future for all," he said. "With this fellowship, what I hope most to achieve is to be able to create and foster connections with other Newman Fellows."
