Adelphi Offers Tuition-Free Sport-Based Youth Development Fellowship in NYC

Garden City, NY (02/14/2022) — Graduate students interested in improving communities through sports can gain hands-on experience and earn a master's degree, tuition-free, through Adelphi's Sport-Based Youth Development Fellowship.

The fellowship, offered at Adelphi's Manhattan campus, is an innovative partnership with sport-based organizations, where students gain valuable experience in preparation for a career in sport-based youth development fields.

"This is an incredible opportunity for students to gain professional experience while earning their master's degree," said Meredith Whitley, PhD, associate professor and coordinator of the fellowship. "Yes, this looks great on a resume, but more importantly, fellows are able to apply what they are learning in the classroom, gain new skills and competencies, and develop relationships with professionals in the sector."

Fellows in the program will work part-time at a sport-based youth development organization. Past participating organizations have included Kids in the Game, Play Rugby USA, New Amsterdam Fencing Academy, Row New York, Ice Hockey in Harlem and Vita Sports Partners.

Housed within Adelphi's College of Education and Health Sciences, fellows earn a Sport Management M.S. or Physical Activity Studies M.A., along with a Sport-Based Youth Development specialization. This specialization prepares students for careers in community-based organizations, school systems, youth sport programs, and recreation settings, along with careers in the corporate social responsibility side of for-profit companies and professional sport teams and leagues.

Rachely Soto, a graduate of the program, who also completed the Sport-Based Youth Development Fellowship, shared this of her experience: "I can honestly say that I use everything that I learned in grad school. All of my notes still come in handy when I need help or am looking to revisit topics for work."
