Adelphi Public Safety to Host Active Shooter, Hostile Intruder Summit
Garden City, NY (09/13/2022) — To mark National Campus Safety Awareness Month, Adelphi University's Department of Public Safety and Transportation will host fellow local colleges and universities for a summit on active shooter and hostile intruder protocols on Friday, September 16. The event will be held in Adelphi's Ruth S. Harley University Center from 12 to 2 p.m.
Institutions attending the summit include Hofstra University, Old Westbury College, Molloy University, Nassau Community College and Long Island University, all members of the Intercollegiate Safety, Security, & Emergency Management Council's (ISSEMC). Also in attendance will be the Garden City Police Department with training and discussions led by Nassau County Department of Homeland Security.
The ISSEMC was established in early 2022 by Adelphi Public Safety's Ray Hughes, chief of campus safety and emergency management. This great working group is composed of individuals that possess a wealth of experience in campus safety, law enforcement and emergency management. The council serves as a network of safety and communication amongst public safety and university police officials to share best practices, lessons learned, and resources.
"As we continue to emphasize the importance of safety on our campuses, we have learned that in order to be effective, we cannot operate alone," said Chief Hughes. "Rather, we need active support, representation and engagement in order to provide varying ideas, approaches, and solutions for equitable emergency planning and response to our individual and neighboring institutions to ensure safe and secure communities."
In addition to monthly group meetings, the ISSEMC has begun sharing regular newsletters called the "Security Blanket," which updates members on the latest campus safety statistics, news, tips and opportunities for training and certification. In addition to active shooter/hostile intruder protocols, topics covered include sexual assault, overdose, Narcan training, dating violence, self defense, masking policies, Clery compliance and more.
Members of the media are welcome to attend and cover.
