Adelphi's Science and Technology Entry Programs Receive National Diversity Award
Garden City, NY (08/23/2021) — Adelphi University's Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program/Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP/STEP) has been awarded the 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.
The award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
"This award highlights the success of Adelphi's implementation of resources and services to support pathways for STEM and professionally licensed careers for historically underrepresented students," said Sabita Nayak, project director of CSTEP/STEP at Adelphi. "This recognition will help to further expand opportunities for funding, collaboration, recruitment and expansion of services for students and faculty geared toward bridging the diversity gap in STEM."
Adelphi was recognized for supporting and inspiring a new generation of students to pursue careers in STEM and for making a significant difference by addressing disparities through retention, mentoring, professional development, teaching and research opportunities.
"Over the last 10 years, our program enrollment has doubled and we serve over six school districts in the community," Nayak said. "This is a great honor, but none greater than the opportunity to serve students as they persevere to fulfill their academic potential."
Adelphi University and 78 other recipients of the award will be featured in the September issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the fourth time in recent years that Adelphi has received this honor, including in 2020 for the physics department's Lab 4 Kids program, in 2019 for the New York Noyce STEAM Pipeline Program and in 2018 for the Horace G. McDonell Science Research Fellowship program.
"We know that many STEM programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication and mentorship for underrepresented students," said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity, in announcing the winners. "We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM."
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine is the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education and is known for its annual INSIGHT Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, which recognizes colleges and universities for diversity and inclusion efforts on their campuses. Adelphi received that honor both in 2019 and 2020.
