Adelphi Theatre Department Presents One-Act Plays Suppressed Desires and Seaweed

Garden City, NY (09/16/2024) — Adelphi University's Theatre Department will present two, one-act plays from icons of the American Little Theater movement, of the early 20th century, Wednesday, September 25 through 29. The plays, Suppressed Desires by Susan Glaspell and George Cram Cook and Seaweed by Alice Gerstenberg will be directed by Triza Cox.

Gerstenberg's Seaweed explores the future prospects and dating escapades of twenty-somethings in the 1920s. It's "Sex and the City" but only four years after women received the right to vote. Gaspell and Cook's Suppressed Desires brings the audience into a 1914 marriage where a husband, wife, and her sister interrogate the psychological meaning of every conscious and unconscious utterance.

There will be six performances of the one-act plays including, Wednesday, September 25, at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28, at 2 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. (livestream available), and Sunday, September 29 at 2 p.m. All shows will take place in Adelphi's Performing Art Center's Black Box Theatre.

This production is a partnership with Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre, a New York-based company with a mission to explore the classics through the lens of gender equity. These plays were discovered through the curation of their Expand the Canon initiative (expandthecanon.com), a call to action to recognize classic plays written by women.
