Lawyer, Author to Discuss the American Legal System at Adelphi
Garden City, NY (03/30/2022) — Author and lawyer Richard C. Cahn will discuss his book "Making Law: A Memoir of Good Times," at Adelphi University on Tuesday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. The online event is part of the "Great Books, Great Conversations" series, which features Adelphi authors.
A trustee emeritus of Adelphi, Cahn will be in conversation with Jacqueline Jones LaMon, JD, professor and vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion. It will be moderated by avid reader Sybile Val, MD, a 1999 graduate of Adelphi.
Cahn's memoir weaves the stories of six dramatic public court cases into the fabric of the American legal system, and shows how lawyers and judges at every level of the system are our last remaining protection against tyranny. He demonstrates that the integrity, independence and effectiveness of the court system needs to be preserved.
Starting his career in the Justice Department, Cahn was a member of U.S. Attorney General Herbert Brownell's program for honor law graduates. He went on to practice law as a private attorney for more than 60 years, fighting court battles pitting ordinary citizens and the government against each other. He argued the nation's first local government reapportionment case before the Supreme Court. Later, he became president of a major county bar association and served for many years on judicial screening committees for the federal and state courts prosecuting attorneys for professional misconduct.
Cahn is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Yale Law School. He was long involved in higher education as regional counsel for the State University of New York, and served as a trustee of Adelphi for 12 years.
