Multicultural, Mindfulness Centers Open at Adelphi
Garden City, NY (10/04/2022) — Just in time for the fall semester, Adelphi University has opened two spaces for students and community members to destress, learn and socialize. Adelphi's new Multicultural and Mindfulness Centers, which officially opened in early September, are located on the third floor of the Ruth S. Harley University Center on the University's Garden City campus.
The new hub for activities, celebrations and programs exploring social and cultural identities, Adelphi's Multicultural Center is a place where all students-especially Black and Indigenous people of color, LGBTQIA+, international and first-generation students-can feel at home.
The Center also helps students take advantage of the full range of opportunities available at Adelphi, connecting them with services, programs, clubs and organizations available on campus and beyond.
"The Multicultural Center is a tangible sign of Adelphi University's commitment to being a model of diversity and inclusion," said Anna Zinko, assistant Vice President for student affairs. "It is a space where students can connect with one another, engage in meaningful dialogue and will be the home for meaningful programs and initiatives from partners across campus."
A Place for Relaxation, Grounding and Reflection
Adelphi's new Mindfulness Center was created to offer campus community members a place to relax and ground themselves in the present moment. Center visitors are encouraged to practice meditation, personal reflection and self-awareness.
The space will also be open to visitors and will host an array of programs that allow students, faculty and staff the opportunity to find out more about mindful practices and connect to the spiritual, cultural and historical traditions of mindfulness.
On Thursday, October 6, the center will host its first event, Meditation & Paint. The two-hour program features a guided meditation followed by an interactive art lesson on ways to use art as a method of reflection and self-care. All art supplies are included. This event is open to the public.
"Adelphi University's Mindfulness Center helps to support our community's holistic wellbeing," said Zinko. "It provides a quiet respite for community members to reset and will host dynamic programs throughout the year to support an engagement with the practice of mindfulness. Community members from across campus serve as part of the university's Mindfulness Center Advisory Board, helping to create a robust and multidisciplinary calendar of events."
