TD Charitable Foundation Awards Grant to Adelphi's Derner Hempstead Child Clinic

Garden City, NY (07/17/2023) — Adelphi University has received a $30,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation in support of new and ongoing mental health services provided by the University's Derner Hempstead Child Clinic.

Since 2015, Adelphi's Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology has sponsored the clinic, where clinical psychology and school psychology doctoral students offer individual and family psychotherapy to children and teens in the historically underserved community of Hempstead, New York. The in-person and online services that they provide treat a range of difficulties from ADHD to post-traumatic stress disorder, with outcomes helping to improve the children's long-term mental and physical healthcare as well as their educational experiences.

"The health and economic needs of the community have increased exponentially since the pandemic," said Nicole Daisy-Etienne, PhD '05, director of the Derner Hempstead Child Clinic. "This grant to the clinic's mental health treatment and awareness program will significantly improve our ability to provide important resources to our neighbors."

The Town of Hempstead has a population of approximately 55,300, according to the 2020 census; 44 percent of residents are African American and 47 percent are Hispanic. The median household income is $62,569.

"We strongly believe in Adelphi's efforts to help sustain and create vibrant, thriving communities," said Andy Bregenzer, metro New York regional president of TD Bank. "TD Bank, through its charitable giving arm, the TD Charitable Foundation, is happy to extend its legacy of support for the Derner Child Clinic's critical initiatives to improve mental health of children and teens."

Since the TD Charitable Foundation's inception in 2002, it has contributed more than $297 million in grant funding to not-for-profit organizations in local communities. In support of its mission, TD recently launched TD Ready Commitment, which refocuses its giving to impact positive change and increase financial security, environmental quality, inclusive communities and equitable health outcomes.

"We are very grateful to the TD Charitable Foundation for being our partner in helping us in our mission to support and sustain healthy communities," said Thomas Kline, EdD, Adelphi vice president of University advancement and external relations. "Furthermore, we are honored to recognize their participation as a platinum member of our new Corporate and Community Partnership program, a key initiative of the University's Momentum 2 strategic plan."
