"When you play, you inspire people across our nation," said Vice President Harris. "You remind all of us what can be achieved with hard work and ambition. Congratulations on all you have accomplished. And good luck on all that is to come. Wherever you all go from here, you will always be champions. And we will always be so proud of you." Adelphi graduate student Ryan Butler, who attended the trip the White House with his team, shared his thoughts about the opportunity. "It is an absolute honor and pleasure to have our team represented at the White House," said Butler. Candice Garwood, a rising junior from Kingston, Jamaica and a student in Adelphi University's Levermore Global Scholars program, was named a 2024 Newman Civic Fellow. She is Adelphi's seventh consecutive student to win this prestigious national annual award. Garwood's inspiration to become a leader started in Jamaica when she assisted in getting donations to those who had been severely affected by the pandemic. She is also an activist in education and started her tutoring journey there by teaching Spanish. Garwood's focus is to work in corporate social responsibility or international development using skills that have been built through Adelphi's programs. "I wanted a very specific degree, which I found at Adelphi," she said. "Adelphi's programs have helped me learn more about global issues, learn how a business operates, and learn more about culture and language." As Garwood pursues her degree in international studies, she also aims to learn new skills that can help her make a difference in education. As Adelphi President Christine M. Riordan noted in her letter to the Newman Fellowship judges: "As one of the most engaged and highly motivated students in her class, Candice has demonstrated that she will make the most of a Newman Civic Fellowship. Adelphi's Sixth Consecutive Newman Civic Fellow Strives to Fight Food Insecurity
Adelphi University junior Joe Sawma, a student from Lebanon, was named a 2023 Newman Civic Fellow, one of the nation's most prestigious leadership opportunities for students. Sawma was recognized by the Newman Civic Fellowship organization for creating a program that lets Adelphi students donate outstanding balances from their meal plans toward items for the campus food pantry. His A Meal for Me, A Meal for You initiative has collected more than $4,000 worth of items for students facing food insecurity since he founded the program during his first year at Adelphi. Sawma will join around 200 students at virtual and in-person events to engage in learning opportunities and develop new ideas for social change. A yearlong civic learning and networking experience, the Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at institutions that are members of Campus Compact, a coalition of colleges and universities committed to advancing the public purposes of higher education. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. Sawma's fellowship will comprise skill development and professional learning, one-to-one leadership development with a local mentor, access to special scholarship and career opportunities, and participation in Newman's annual convention. He hopes to broaden his commitment to doing good. "I want to expand my meal plan donation program to campuses across the United States," he said. "I hope to make some connections through Newman to make that happen."
